The above photo of a Volkswagen prank is one year old as of today, but it’s the most current picture available of the annual UBC Engineering prank, which involves suspending hollowed-out Volkswagen shells from (mostly) Vancouver-area bridges. See, this year’s attempted prank failed to yeild any photos—what with the Beetle that the five students were trying to suspend plummeting into the Burrard Inlet and all.
Sorry, no YouTube either. If it makes you happier, five students were arrested to the tune of $5,000 each. Talk about bridge funding.
Still not satisfied? This 2001 San Francisco news footage, featuring the Golden Gate Bridge, a red Beetle and “…a group of engineering students from the University of Columbia(!) in Vancouver…”, surely won’t help either:
Some more choice quotes from the above video: “The splash wasn’t as big as I thought it was going to be,” and it was “anti-climactic, it wasn’t even a big splash.” Given that Channel 4 news managed to run footage that does not include the Beetle’s actual splashdown, DRIVEN is inclined to agree.
Sorry, folks—slow news day.
