February 4-15,Vancouver—Our computers know the intimate details of our entire lives, from what books we like, to where we shop and how much money is in our bank accounts. So what would your computer say about you?
Inspired by David Byrne and Brian Eno’s 1981 album My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, Live from a Bush of Ghosts follows a woman with an all too common job in the developing world: melting down computer parts to retrieve precious metals for mere pennies a day. As she works, the ghosts of the machines’ former users appear from the thick, toxic smoke. A young boy lured by an online predator, a suicidal stockbroker and a heavy metal televangelist each haunt the woman with their tragic tales, in this ultra-modern example of mixed media theatre that examines the fallout of digital culture.
Electronic hip hop band, No Luck Club, performs along with live video mixes by Candelario Andrade, and actor/dancer Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg takes on multiples roles to create a digital ghost world, asking audiences to question both technology and “progress.” Those brave enough can join Theatre Conspiracy in its mission to tap the “crosscurrents of international culture, society and politics to create, interpret and translate theatre that speak beyond borders,” and think twice about the digital cycle of life, and where your techno-trash end ups.
