The DRIVEN calendar, “Soon”: The Chieftains on Saint Patrick’s Day

March 17, Toronto—You can opt for the traditional wearing of the green, drinking of the stout, and mangling of the brogue for Saint Patrick’s Day this year, or you can head down to Roy Thompson Hall in Toronto and catch the Chieftains, one of Ireland’s most loved musical exports. (On a scale from Lord of the Dance to U2-before-Bono-met-Paul-Martin, the Chieftains land somewhere between the Pogues and Van Morrison.)

For over four decades, the Chieftains have been bringing Irish “trad” to the world, and they are well-known for hooking up with a wide range of musical collaborators. This means the St. Paddy’s Day audience can expect some surprise guests to take the stage.

The boys will be playing many of their most familiar tunes, along with selections from their upcoming album that will explore connections between Irish and Mexican musical traditions—so be prepared for a little ¡Ay Caramba! mixed with the aye-tiddle-aye.
