In a event that sits at a nexus between two areas of concern here at DRIVENmag.com (laptop theft and Facebook addiction), the admittedly amusing news has surfaced, in an Associated Press report, that a man has been arrested in Brandenton, Florida, for stealing a laptop from a fellow Starbucks patron, because the thief really wanted to check Facebook.
Nineteen-year-old Corey Kinney, a modern-day Jean Valjean, has been charged with “robbery by sudden snatching.” Kinney apparently asked the laptop’s owner if he could borrow the device to visit his Facebook page. When his request was refused, he allegedly grabbed the computer and bolted out of the coffee shop. In the parking lot, he was tackled and held by two samaritans until the authorities arrived.
Is is not yet known whether Kinney will attempt a defense of diminished capacity due to addiction to social networking—but we think it’s worth a shot. (Hopefully, he will update his status soon!)
Let this serve as a cautionary tale to some of you. You know who you are.
