CD review: Nat King Cole’s Re:Generations

The late Nat King Cole had conceivably the sweetest and most romantic voice of all the great pop crooners, and you can bet there were scores of babies conceived to his silky soundtrack. That classic voice is now being introduced to a modern audience via an eclectic collection of collaborations with current singers and producers.

Highlight track: “Brazilian Love Song”
Subpar track: “Nature Boy”
Overall rating: 5/10

This concept worked superbly on the Verve Remixed series, and the success rate on Re:Generations is generally decent. Top cuts include the tropical theme of “Brazilian Love Song,” boosted by the sweetly seductive vocals of Bebel Gilberto; The Marley Brothers adding an appropriate Caribbean vibe to “Calypso Blues”; and Brazilian Girls enlivening “El Choclo” in breezy, brassy fashion. Cut Chemist’s percussion-fuelled grooves give Cole’s voice an adventurous new setting on “Day In, Day Out,” while Cole’s daughter Natalie’s vocal interplay with Will.i.am on “Straighten Up and Fly Right” is yet another refreshing treat.

cd-natkingcole1On the down side — because there always is one, when it comes to these types of affairs — the gimmicky turntablism on “Pick Up” (featuring Just Blaze) is nothing short of annoying. Meanwhile, the wacky idea of TV on the Radio tackling the gorgeous ballad “Nature Boy” turns out to be simply wack.
