DVD preview: Caprica—there’s frakkin’ life after/before BSG

Click here for Earl Dittman’s reviews of the new DVDs for Role Models, Australia and season one of Breaking Bad.

Before the Battlestar Galactica prequel Caprica begins its regular series run in 2010 on the Sci Fi Channel, Universal Studios Home Entertainment is releasing the feature-length pilot episode on DVD and for digital download this April 21. Come check out our preview after the (FTL) jump.

As Battlestar Galatica, one of the best TV drama and sci-fi series ever produced, draws to an end (just two episodes remain before the series finale on March 20, when we find out if the humans and Cylons find a home to call home), news has leaked that life on Caprica will continue on once the old girl Galatica is taken out of service. Just when you are about to start feeling frakkin’ Galatica withdrawl, you’ll be able to feed your BSG habit with Caprica, the feature-length prequel that will be released on DVD as a limited-edition uncut and unrated version before the series’ broadcast premiere.

Set over 50 years before the events of Battlestar Galactica, Caprica (executive produced by BSG’s Ronald D. Moore and David Eick) shows a world at the peak of its power, grappling with new science and technologies and the issues they create. Caprica follows two rival families and their patriarchs—Daniel Graystone (Eric Stoltz) and Joseph Adama (Esai Morales)—as they compete and thrive in the vibrant world of the 12 Colonies, a society recognizably close to our own. Enmeshed in the burgeoning technology of artificial intelligence and robotics that will eventually lead to the creation of the Cylons, the two houses go toe-to-toe, blending action with corporate conspiracy and sexual politics.

Additionally, the Caprica pilot DVD will be packed with load of bonus features, including commentaries, deleted scenes, blogs and several featurettes. It’s a rare sneak preview into a new series that will fill the shoes of an iconic TV series. “If Battlestar Galactica offered us a way to shatter the conventions of space opera,” writer/executive producer Moore explains, “Caprica will challenge the conventions of science fiction storytelling as a whole.” While executive producer Eick adds, “Part sweeping soap, part meditation on the dangerous moral ramifications of artificial intelligence, this is a truly unique opportunity to continue telling stories which will be as daring and shocking as the best of Galactica—and yet will be altogether different from Galactica.” Prepare to frakkin’ jump back to the future.

I saw the preview during the final episode of BSG, Cant you guys give us more to look at? I can’t wait. Do a a BSG geek a frakkin favor!

  4. Earl Says,

We are working with the Sci-Fi Channel to bring you some additional scenes from CAPRICA. Not to brag, but I have watched CAPRICA (several times) and be prepared to be blown away by this breathtaking sequel on April 21 when the DVD hits the shelves. CAPRICA (which takes place 50 years before the Cylons nuke Caprica City) looks different than BSG, feels different than BSG, is racier than BSG (sex clubs and a little T&A) but it still has the heart and soul of BATTLESTAR GALATICA. SPOILER ALERTS!!! The native-Taurian Adams family on CAPRICA (headed by Esai Morales) changed their name to Adams from Adama! And you get to meet the young, adolescent son of the family –and his name is William. Get it? If you’d like any more shocking clues before release date, just frakkin respond to this posting as much as you like.

  5. Alex Says,

Does anybody there want to send me a free copy of Caprica? I am a hardcore fan of BSG, but I don’t want to go online looking for a bootleg download. I want Caprica to stay on TV for at least wight seasons (if it’s as good as Earl claims). Why do I doubt him, coming from the same guys who created Battlestar, it can’t help but be fantastic.
If you need my address, just let me know.

  6. Kaley Wu Says,

I was searching for the seven Caprica Preview Clips that had been released and I came across this. It is a very detailed Caprica review by someone that has seen the pilot.

  7. Earl Says,

Kaley, having seen the pilot already, I have to say that it is a very good, detailed synopsis of the CAPRICA DVD. I can’t say that I agree with all of it, but it’s very concise. Kaley, if you don’t get the DVD on Tuesday April 21 (which you should, being the devoted BSG fan that you sound like) let me know and I’ll see what I can do. Thanks for your input!
