July 1-12, Toronto – When reading through a list of the 140-odd theatre productions at this year’s Toronto Fringe Festival, certain titles jump out at you: Killing Kevin Spacey, The Art of Being a Bastard, and Fucking Stephen Harper: How I Sexually Assaulted the 22nd Prime Minister of Canada and Where It Got Me. However, none of these are as intriging as Dracula in a Time of Climate Change.
To avoid paraphrasing, I believe that the brief play summary speaks for itself:
“With rivers rising, ice caps melting and blood becoming ever more toxic, Dracula is faced with a dilemma: if the humans he feeds on go extinct, what happens to vampires? A play about love, bloodsucking, the perils of activism and the end of the world.”
Is this red & green show the perfect combination of Bram Stoker and Al Gore? Maybe, or maybe not. But if nothing else, it’s still a great title. For those of you that can’t get enough of everyone’s favourite Transilvannyian* (not you, Bartók Béla), how about reading Stoker’s classic novel in real time?
Dracula in a Time of Climate Change starts Friday and runs until July 11 at Glen Morris Studio Theatre. Check the Fringe Festival listings for more details.

Well, that Dracula title might catch your eye, but “The Art of Being a Bastard” was definitely worth my $10! I saw it on opening night & it was bloody (well, likely less bloody than something about Dracula, but still) hilarious. Great fun, you should see it!
It’s at the Robert Gill Theatre…
