Idol Chatter: Bruce Lee

Legendary martial arts master and film icon Bruce Lee died 36 years ago today (Monday July 20, 2009). Lee’s short life is overshadowed by a legacy that far exceeded his film star status. Though best known for his martial arts – especially his pioneering of the Jeet Kune Do fighting style — he was also a philosopher (after majoring in philosophy in university), writer, and director whose role in films was sometimes offscreen, as well.

lee-statueIn 2005, the city of Mostar, Bosnia unveiled a life-size bronze statue of Lee, exactely one day before a similar statue debuted in Hong Kong. The latter makes sense: Though born in America, Lee lived in Hong Kong for most of his life, and was identified as a Chinese martial artist. If you’re anything like me, you find it strange that a small southeastern European country that seemingly has nothing to do with Bruce Lee would choose to immortalize him in bronze. However, the Bosnian Bruce is largely symbolic: It is meant to represent a fight against ethic divisions. ”We will always be Muslims, Serbs or Croats,” said Veselin Gatalo of the organization Urban Movement Mostar in a BBC report, “But one thing we all have in common is Bruce Lee.”

Instead of attempting to comment on that sentiment, here is a clip of Bruce Lee fighting Chuck Norris in the Colosseum in the 1972 film Way of the Dragon.
