Puma Fall ’09 Fashion Show

Toronto–I remember being one of the first kids at my high school rockin’ Pumas. While others wore their Roms or Olympias (heaven forbid you be caught in low-rent Northstars) I had my white and orange Pumas with the suction cup bottoms. Sweet.

Puma Canada unveiled their new fall line at a raucous event at Toronto’s Spoke Club a short time ago, with a perfect mix of rock’n’roll, sports and fashion. Puma’s heavy involvement in soccer was highlighted by their new line of Alexander McQueen-designed wear with an emphasis of the upcoming 2010 African-hosted World Cup. The company is also heavily committed to motorsports with racing gear fashions featuring both Ducati and Ferrari.

CD review: The New York Dolls’ ’Cause I Sez So

This is the second album in the New York Dolls second recording incarnation, and original 1973 producer Todd Rundgren is back in the producer’s seat. Though the youthful exuberance and genre-defying rock’n’roll assault have been lost in a long-forgotten stream of dollar mascara, they have nonetheless been replaced with a headmaster’s maturity and dignity.

CD review: The Answer’s
Everyday Demons

Let’s establish this reviewer’s hard-rock preferences: Sabbath up to Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath, Deep Purple up to Burn, Van Halen avec David Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar avec Montrose, and Aerosmith up to Rocks. AC/DC? One of the most overrated bands of all time. Still, the question about The Answer remains: How does the rock stack up?

CD review: Joel Plaskett’s Three

It is time that Canada realized what a national treasure Joel Plaskett is. Whether with his band The Emergency or on his own solo recording, Plaskett keeps writing perfect pop songs with lyrics that will stick to you like peanut butter on the roof of your mouth. Now, in a time of music industry doom and gloom he has the audacity to release a triple CD Three.

The rum diaries: the tale of a tasting

I first acquired a taste for rum in Newfoundland, when a “double dark and dirty” was the standard bar drink. Subsequent trips to Cuba and the Caribbean made me a complete convert, as I couldn’t stand the sticky-sweet beer at the swim-up bars.

So, when Bacardi called with an invite to a tasting and mixology session, I was ready.

CD review: The BPA, I Think We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Boat

The Brighton Port Authority (BPA)
I Think We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Boat

(Southern Fried Records/Fontana North)

Norman Cook doesn’t make records, he throws little parties. Early career band The Housemartins made listeners feel like we were in a pub discussing football results with the lads. Later on, Fatboy Slim threw down at a sweaty rave. In 2009, The BPA is inviting us to a very cool cocktail party with friends old and new.

Is it suave enough for toi et moi?
